Narrative
WAWAYANDA, NY – A school bus carrying 44 passengers overturned along the interstate in north Orange County, killing two adults and injuring five others.
The accident happened just after 1 p.m. on I-84 in Wawayanda, which is just north of Slate Hill and not far from the border between New York and New Jersey.
Police say that for unknown reasons, the bus left the roadway, travelled down an embankment, and overturned.
A 43-year-old woman and a 77-year-old woman both died in the crash, and five people were hospitalized with critical injuries. Thirty-seven people sustained injuries of unknown severity.
Authorities say that a tire malfunction may have caused the crash. The bus was transporting students from Farmingdale High School in Long Island to band camp in Greeley, PA.
The investigation is ongoing.
