Narrative
SOMERS, NY – A 36-year-old Lyft driver died, and his 17-year-old passenger sustained critical injuries Monday in a head-on collision along Route 100 in Somers.
The accident happened in the afternoon on the Somerstown Turnpike just south of Route 35, which is just north of the Muscoot Reservoir and west of I-684.
Police say that Junior Polanco Brito was transporting a passenger when his northbound 2020 Honda CRV entered the southbound lane of traffic on Route 100 and collided head-on with a southbound 2015 Mack sanitation truck.
Polanco Brito died at the scene of the accident, while his passenger went to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.
The truck driver did not require hospitalization.
A full investigation is underway to determine what might have caused Polanco Brito to veer into oncoming traffic.
