Narrative
NEW YORK, NY – A man was taken into custody after driving into a crowd of people near Gramercy Park, leaving one person dead and several others injured.
Police say a gray Hyundai Sonata driven by 26-year-old Mahbub Ali was northbound on Third Avenue at about 8 p.m. when he lost control of his vehicle near 21st Street and jumped the curb.
An 23-year-old man was rushed to Bellevue Hospital, where he died a short time later. A 26-year-old woman suffered a fractured leg, and a 21-year-old pedestrian sustained a laceration to his left leg.
First responders also transported an 18-year-old male cyclist who was struck, as well as a 25-year-old woman who was a passenger in the Hyundai.
Ali was unhurt and was taken into custody at the scene. Authorities have filed a number of charges against him, including Manslaughter, Vehicular Manslaughter, Assault, and Driving While Intoxicated.
