Narrative
SATEN ISLAND, NY – One person died, and one sustained serious injuries Monday in a solo crash along the service road for the Staten Island Expressway.
The incident happened around 10:15 p.m. near Exit 6, which is just southeast of South Avenue.
Police say a black BMW sedan was headed westbound when the driver lost control and hit a fence and pole, at which point a passenger was thrown from the car. That passenger, identified as 36-year-old Usman Chugahati, died from injuries sustained in the accident.
Another passenger sustained minor injuries in the accident.
The driver of the vehicle fled the scene after removing the license plates from the BMW. Police are still searching for this person.
Officials closed the service road in the area of the accident while police gathered evidence and clean-up crews worked at the scene.
